Fraisier via Japan! (Shaped postcard)

Fascination is often a two-way street–today’s postcards are part of the proof!  France has many fans worldwide.  While it’s far from a perfect country (does one exist?), France has a lot of strong points not the least of which is its cuisine and pâtisseries! Last fall, French cuisine was even declared “world intangible heritage” by UNESCO.  While an article on French food, its influence and restaurants in Japan could go on for pages, judging by my postcards, it’s French sweets that steal the show!  I’ve received three fraisier-themed cards including the one above and several postcard messages decorated with macaroon stickers!

Here in France, certain pâtissiers are stars with immediate name/brand recognition–Pierre Hermé and Christophe Michalak do not need an introduction!  A trip to Ladurée in Paris is a must for fans of macaroons not worried about damaging their wallet!  Both Hermé and Michalak have visited Japan and Hermé even has his own boutique in Tokyo!  I could go on but my mouth is already watering!

French Sweets, Japanese Stamp

I realized just how much certain French desserts are appreciated in Japan when I received this holiday stamp last year! I wasn’t expecting French sweets to be on a Japanese stamp!  The top of the stamp shows off a very appetizing fraisier–a light cake which puts strawberries and cream together in perfect harmony.  I can’t name the middle dessert but it’s shape is synonymous with a multitude of tasty cakes you could find in any decent pâtisserie.  And finally, how much more festive can you get than a Bûche de Noël or Yule Log in English (round chocolate cake)? While a fraisier is more of a summer dessert here (ie when strawberries are in season) as opposed to a holiday treat, there is nothing more Christmas-like than a good bûche.  Last year, we made a chocolate bûche with an espresso-mascarpone filling and a chocolate ganache frosting for Christmas.  I admit that I’ve already started thinking about this year’s cake…
